UH softball beats Colorado State

Advertiser Staff

Jessica Morton scattered six hits and struck out five as 17th-ranked Hawai'i defeated Colorado State, 8-1, last night in the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Morton, who yielded a fifth-inning homer to Lauren Cusick, walked just one and improved to 4-0.

Freshman second baseman Melissa Gonzalez batted 3 for 4, including a three-run homer, to lead the Rainbow Wahine (23-9). Tanisha Milca and Kate Robinson each went 2 for 4, and Katie Grimes and Kaulana Gould each hit RBI doubles.

Cusick and Kayla Kreutzman each had two hits for the Rams (15-11).

Earlier, Colorado State defeated St. Mary's, 4-3, in eight innings, and Marissa Drewery pitched a no-hitter with nine strikeouts as No. 25 California beat St. Mary's, 7-0. Drewery improved to 16-4.

Northwestern joins the tournament today, playing California at noon and Colorado State at 2. Hawai'i will play St. Mary's at 4.

VOLLEYBALL

WAC TOURNEY WILL BE HERE IN 2008, THEN 2017

It might not have a date yet, but if you want to see a Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament in Hawai'i, you might want to go this year. The conference's new "rotation" championship scheduling means the Rainbow Wahine won't host again until 2017.

The rotation unofficially began in 2006 at Nevada. New Mexico State hosted last year and Hawai'i is scheduled to host the tournament Nov. 20 to 22. That date will most likely change because the WAC football schedule, released after volleyball, has the Warriors playing Idaho Nov. 22.

WAC commissioner Karl Benson said the date conflict will be resolved. He has left it to UH, which has yet to announce what change will be made.

The rotation continues with the volleyball championship moving to Boise State in 2009, followed by Fresno State (2010), Louisiana Tech (2011), Idaho (2012), Utah State (2013), San Jose State (2014) and back to Nevada in 2015.

The tournament raises funds for Rainbow Wahine volleyball's summer tuition assistance program and transportation to spring tournaments, among other things.
