Kailua private school evicted today

Advertiser Staff

Redemption Academy, a private Christian school that has served the Kailua area for 30 years, has been ordered to vacate the buildings housing its middle and high school programs.

The order was received this morning and gave officials until just 3 p.m. to be out of the buildings, school officials said.

At midday, the campus was busy with activity as school staff, volunteers and students helped move furniture out of the classrooms.

Differences with its governing body, the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, led to the eviction, school officials said.

However, the school will remain open, both for the remainder of summer school as well as for the new year that begins in the fall, Dean Adrian Yuen said.

The academy's preschool and grade school programs are unaffected by today's announcement, and officials said that for the short term, older students will be accommodated in the remaining facilities under its control.

Yuen said the school had been notified of an impending eviction, but had been trying to work things out.

Still, the suddenness of the order came as a surprise, Yuen said.

Redemption Academy serves 80 to 90 students and is located at 355 N. Kainalu Drive.
