Grove outpoints ex-champ

Advertiser Staff

Kendall Grove of Maui earned a split-decision victory over Evan Tanner of Texas in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale mixed martial arts card last night in Las Vegas.

Judges scored the fight, 30-26, 30-26, 28-29, as Grove improved to 11-5.

Tanner, a former UFC middleweight world champion, fell to 34-9.

Grove opened a cut on Tanner's head with an elbow in the first round, and later caught Tanner with a jumping knee shot.

Grove then appeared to take control in the second round, ripping an elbow that left Tanner wobbling. But Grove could not finish off his foe, and Tanner turned to leg kicks and punches in the third round to leave the outcome in the judges' hands.
