Mountain biking: Wells, Gould clinch spots on U.S. roster

TRENTINO, Italy — Todd Wells and Georgia Gould were the first two racers to clinch spots on the U.S. Olympic mountain biking team, after no Americans secured an automatic bid today in the world championships.

Wells, from Durango, Colo., finished 15th in the men's race, while Gould crashed and still finished ninth in the women's championship. Each made the Olympic team based on having the best cumulative placing in international races this year.

Wells was sixth in a World Cup race at Vallnord, Andorra on May 31, the best showing by an American man in an International Cycling Union race this season.

Gould, from Fort Collins, Colo., had a pair of fifth-place finishes out of three World Cup events.

USA Cycling will finish its Olympic selection in all disciplines — BMX, road, track and mountain biking — by July 1.
