Kauai swimmer who died identified

Advertiser Staff

No foul play is suspected but an autopsy will be performed sometime this week to determine cause and manner in the death Saturday of a 46-year-old Kekaha man who was pulled from the water fronting Hanalei Pavilion on Kaua'i at 2:49 p.m.

Darren Gonsalves was pronounced dead at Mahelona Medical Center.

Police said Gonsalves was seen swimming away from a buoy used for canoe races at the start of a race when he went under water. Gonsalves was brought to shore on a surfboard where rescue personnel performed CPR.
