At a school recently named by Sports Illustrated as No. 1 in the nation for athletics, Daniel Chow is being called the most successful wrestler/judoka in the history of Punahou.

His list of achievements — both individually and in the team concept — support that claim.

In wrestling, Chow was an Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up and took third in the state as a freshman. He has since won the ILH and state individual championships in three different weight classes: at 135 as a sophomore, 140 as a junior and 145 this past season, when he was named ILH Wrestler of the Year.

As a junior team captain, Chow also was a valuable leader in helping the Buffanblu

win their first ILH team championship since 1978 and first state title since 1968. This season, again with Chow as team captain, Punahou repeated as state champions.

In judo, Chow was a league champion all four years and a state champ the past three, giving him six individual state titles in the two sports. He will be leaving this week to compete in the U.S. Olympic Judo Team Trials in Las Vegas.

Chow's achievements carry over off the mat, as well. He maintained a 3.6 grade point average with a class schedule that included AP courses, took a leadership role in a fundraising campaign for Aloha United Way, and is a candidate for the Dave Schultz Award, given annually to wrestlers who show strong academic work, ethics and character.

Chow will be attending Boston University in the fall — unless he is chosen off the wait list for Harvard first.
