Mililani strikes early to hold off Kapolei

By Kalani Takase
Advertiser Staff Writer

MILILANI — Nehoa Akina scored a game-high 16 points, including four 3-pointers, as host Mililani held off a second-half rally by Kapolei last night to win, 57-49.

The Trojans improved to 5-2 in front of a home crowd of about 250. The Hurricanes fell to 5-2 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference West Division.

"I thought our game plan went pretty well," said Mililani head coach Hiram Akina. "Our defense and our rebounding was pretty good for us tonight."

Warren Duke had 11 points for the Trojans. Nick DeMusis and Jon Keen added nine apiece.

Mililani avenged a 66-65 loss at Kapolei on Jan. 2. In that game, the Hurricanes shot 28 free throws, making 18 of them. Last night they were held to 3 of 11 from the line.

"That was one of our keys of the game," Hiram Akina said. "We weren't fouling so they couldn't go to the free-throw line and make free throws."

For the second consecutive game, Mililani opened with a strong first half, leading 35-19 at the intermission.

"They shot the ball really well in the first half," said Kapolei head coach Gary Ellison. "We couldn't stop them in the first half, they were hitting everything, but we came back in the second half."

The Hurricanes scored on their first three possessions of the second half to get within 11 points, but still trailed 46-35 to start the fourth quarter.

Kapolei went on a 9-2 run that was capped by a Nate Dixon 3-pointer to make it 48-44 with 4:08 to play.

Mililani answered with a big defensive play by Nehoa Akina, who batted away a pass and made a layup on the other end to put the Trojans back up by six.

"I thought his steal in the second half really changed the momentum for us," said Hiram Akina. "They were coming back, they hit three or four straight baskets and that (steal) really turned the table for us."

Kapolei was again threatening after Lawrence Olive's putback made it 52-48 with 2:09 left. But Mililani answered again with a defensive stand. Scott Burns blocked a shot by Kapolei's Mason Koa to give the Trojans possession. He then found DeMusis under the basket, and his layup made it 54-48 with 23 seconds left.

"We made our way back into the game, but near the end we just ran out of gas," Ellison said.

Olive led Kapolei with 15 points and Dixon added 12.
