Ho ties for fifth at World Junior

Coco Ho of Sunset Beach tied for fifth place in the women's division of the Billabong World Junior Championships in Australia.
The final day of the women's division was completed today in 1- to 3-foot waves at North Narabeen, Australia.
Sally Fitzgibbons of Australia defeated New Zealand's Paige Hareb in the final to win the women's title. Fitzgibbons received $3,500 for the victory, and became the third consecutive Australian to win the women's division.
Ho won her third-round heat in the morning, but then lost in the quarterfinals to Australia's Laura Enever.
Ho had the lead for most of the 25-minute quarterfinal, but Enever won it with a last-second wave. Needing a 6.5 to win the heat, Enever caught a wave just as the final horn sounded, and received an 8.93 (out of 10). Enever's two-wave total was 15.10 to Ho's 12.66.
Earlier in the day, Ho had a two-wave score of 16.23 in her third-round victory over Brazil's Bruna Schmitz. It was the highest score of the third round.
The contest is considered the world championship for surfers age 20 and younger, professional or amateur.
Ho, 16, has been the highest-placing Hawai'i surfer in the women's division the past two years. She placed third last year.
Two other Hawai'i surfers — Leila Hurst of Kaua'i and Alessa Quizon of Wai'anae — were eliminated in the third round.
The men's division was completed earlier in the week. Brazil's Paublo Paulino defeated Tonino Benson of the Big Island to win the men's title.
MARATHON
EX-'BOW WINS, EARNS U.S. TIME TRIALS SPOT
Cheryl (Smith) Foody, a former runner for the University of Hawai'i women's track team, won the Orange County Marathon yesterday in Irvine, Calif.
Foody, who ran for UH in 2000, finished in a time of 2 hours, 38 minutes and 38 seconds.
The victory earns Foody an expenses-paid trip to the time trials for the U.S. Olympic Team on April 20 in Boston.
Foody also won the OC Marathon in 2004.
GOLF
KING, ISHII, LYNCH TO GIVE FREE LESSONS
Aloha Section PGA professionals will provide free, one-on-one 10-minute lessons at the Sony Open in Hawai'i. Lessons will be in the Spectator Village, near the 11th and 17th holes.
Students can get a quick introduction to the game or have their swing evaluated. There will be two inflatable hitting cages provided by Provisions Golf.
Teachers include 2007 Golf Professional of the Year Jerry King, 1990 Hawaiian Open Champion David Ishii and 2007 Teacher of the Year John Lynch.
Lessons will be given Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon, and Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. Reservations can be made at the tent or by contacting the Aloha Section PGA (593-2230) in advance.
