Advertiser Staff

A 67-year-old Pahala man died Monday from injuries he suffered when he ran off Mai'a Camp Road above Pahala while riding an ATV.

Ka'u patrol officers were called to the scene at 5:18 p.m. and learned that Roy K. Okinishi was heading south on a Honda all-terrain vehicle when he lost control and ran off the left side of the road. Police said Okinishi was not wearing a helmet.

He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:04 p.m. There have been at least 13 deaths of ATV riders in the last six years in Hawai'i.
