Illinois linebacker Martez Wilson was treated at a Champaign hospital early Friday after a stabbing incident at a bar near campus.

Illinois spokesman Kent Brown said the sophomore from Simeon High School was treated at Carle Foundation Hospital and is in stable condition. A "full recovery" is expected, Brown said.

The Champaign Police Department declined to name Wilson as a victim but offered a chronology of Friday's events.

According to the department, officers were called to the Fubar at 306 E. Green St. at 2:04 a.m. because of a fight in progress. At about 2:44 a.m., police said, officers were called to a hospital because a stabbing victim from the incident was being treated.

Police said a "verbal altercation" began among a group of men at Fubar. When the victim allegedly went to assist another man who'd been surrounded by a group of men, he was stabbed.

No suspects were located at the scene, and the incident remains under investigation, police said.

Wilson, 20, was one of the key recruits in coach Ron Zook's rebuilding program but hasn't had an easy time in two years in Champaign.

Wilson was suspended for the 2008 season finale at Northwestern for violating team rules. The loss likely cost the Illini a bowl bid, and they finished 5-7.

Wilson was a backup on the 2007 Rose Bowl team and began spring practice as a starter, but he was demoted for a time. He became a starter in the fall and finished third on the team with 73 tackles, 38 solos. He had 5½ tackles for losses, including three sacks.
