Fire damages apartment unit in Kailua, Kona

Advertiser Staff

A fire yesterday afternoon did about $20,000 worth of damage to a first-floor apartment in the Kona Coffee Villas complex in the Kailua, Kona area of the Big Island.

Big island fire officials said three engine companies responded to the 3 p.m. fire call at 79-7199 Mamalahoa Highway.

Upon arriving, firefighters found smoke coming out from the bottom of the windows of an apartment on the first floor of the three-story building.

No one was home and the fire was contained to the apartment's kitchen area.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
