ALA MOANA
Sailboat sinks off Magic Island; owner unknown

State harbors division personnel are trying to identify a sailboat that sank yesterday near Magic Island.

Honolulu Fire Department rescue personnel responded at 3:15 p.m., but divers were unable to determine the boat's number, which is covered by silt. No one was aboard the 18- to 20-foot sailboat, which sank about 30 feet off the diamondhead side of Magic Island and the Ala Wai yacht harbor, said Fire Department Capt. Earle Kealoha.

The owner of the boat is unknown. Witnesses saw the boat moored Sunday near the location of its sinking, Kealoha said.

The sinking is not presenting any problems for boating traffic, according to Kealoha. The hull is submerged in shallow water but the mast is visible, he said.
