Mayor Mufi Hannemann today applauded the Waipio Little League team's victory over Lake Charles, La., in the U.S. championship game of the Little League World Series.

In a statement, Hannemann said "These young athletes did an outstanding job, and everyone in Hawai'i should be very proud of them.

"I wish our home team the best of luck in tomorrow's world championship game against Matamoros, Mexico."

Hannemann also expressed his best wishes to 5-year-old Paliku Winchester and his family, according to a news release from the city.

Paliku, who was recently diagnosed with lymphoma, is the brother of Waipio third baseman Pikai Winchester and has been an inspiration to the team.

Hannemann joined City Councilman Nestor Garcia and many other Waipio Little League fans and supporters who watched the game at the Mililani Golf Club Restaurant.
