Police arrest fugitive in Waipio

Police arrested a fugitive wanted on warrants totaling $115,000 early yesterday morning in Waipi'o.

Daniel Kaina Morte, 29, was arrested at a fast-food restaurant on Waipi'o Uka Boulevard at 3:05 a.m. Morte was being held at the main police station cellblock today and will be taken to District Court tomorrow.

Morte was convicted on Jan. 18 of three misdemeanor counts of causing an accident involving games to a vehicle or property stemming from a June 2006 incident, according to Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center records. He was sentenced to 10 days confinement to run concurrently.

In November 2006, Morte was found guilty of causing an accident in January 2006 involving death or serious bodily injury. Morte's sentence included a lifetime suspension of his driver's license, five years probation and ordered to make restitution of $2,806.

His 10 convictions include three felony counts of auto theft.

A bail company yesterday also discharged bonds totaling $63,000 it posted for Morte on six past offenses following his latest arrest.
