Advertiser Staff

Landon Hernandez drove in four runs, and Jared Alexander settled after a shaky start and Hawai'i beat Nevada, 10-4, tonight in the opener of a four-game Western Athletic Conferene baseball series at Les Murakami Stadium.

Hernandez's three-run home run in the seventh inning padded UH's lead and was his team's first home run in 16 games.

Alexander (5-3) went seven innings, allowing four runs, nine hits and a walk with five strikeouts for the Rainbows (17-21 overall, 9-8 WAC). Matt Daly walked three in a scoreless eighth and Cameron Wheeler

Rod Scurry (4-5) allowed seven run, seven hits, four walks and two hit batsmen in five innings for the Wolf Pack (21-15, 8-5), whose four-game win streak was snapped.

The Wolf Pack wasted little time against Alexander, scoring in the first. Jason Sadoian led off the game with a double to left and took third when Matt Bowman grounded out to second. After Jason Rodriguez struck out, Shaun Kort singled off the right-field wall to score Sadoian and Terry Walsh followed with a triple off the right-field wall to make it 2-0.

But the Rainbows sent nine batters to the plate in a four-run bottom of the first to take the lead against Scurry. Sean Montplaisir led off with a walk, Derek DuPree's single and Jon Hee's single loaded the bases to set up Brandon Haislet's bases-loaded walk to force in a run. Jeff Van Doornum followed with a single to right to score DuPree and reload the bases and tie the game at 2. Kevin Macdonald also singled to right to make it 3-2 and keep the bases loaded. Vinnie Catricala struck out and Greg Garcia grounded out to second to score Haislet and advance the other runners, making ti 4-2. On the play, second baseman David Ciarlo bobbled what might have been a double-play grounder.

Nevada tied it in the third. With one out, Bowman singled to left-center and took third on Rodriguez's single to the same area. Both scored on Kort's double to the left-center alley to tie the game at 4.

Hawai'i regained the lead in the bottom of the third. Haislet led off by being hit by a pitch and took third on Van Doornum's single to left-center. Macdonald reached on a fielder's choice on a failed squeeze attempt in which Haislet stayed in a rundown long enough for the runners to be at second and third, setting up Catricala's sacrifice fly to left to give UH a 5-4 lead.

The Rainbows increased their lead to 6-4 in the fourth. With one out, Montplaisir was hit by a pitch and took third on DuPree's hit-and-run single to left. But left fielder Bowman's throw back to the infield was low and got away from an infielder, allowing Montplaisir to score and DuPree to take second.

Hawai'i made it 7-4 in the fourth. With one out, Macdonald walked, Catricala singled and Greg Garcia walked to load the bases. Hernandez's sacrifice fly to right scored Macdonald and sent Catricala to third.

The Rainbows padded their lead in the seventh with a three-run home run to left-center by Hernandez off Sammy Miller. It was UH's first home run since March 21 against Fresno State.
