Medical condition suspected in Hawaii Kai accident

Advertiser Staff

Traffic investigators suspect the driver of a pickup truck involved in an accident with a traffic signal pole today in Hawai'i Kai suffered a medical condition.

The 53-year-old Waimanalo man driving the 2007 Chevy pickup was taken in critical condition to Straub Clinic & Hospital, according to Sgt. Danny Kaholokula of the Vehicular Homicide Unit, which investigates fatal and critical accidents.

The 10:13 a.m. accident occurred on Keahole Street north of Kalaniana'ole Highway near Hawai'i Kai Towne Center.

The driver was exiting the Towne Center parking lot in the left-turn only lane but the truck went directly across the roadway, over a traffic island and struck the traffic signal pole. The man was found unconscious in the truck, Kaholokula said.

There were no other injuries, Kaholokula said.
