TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Saving Grace," 7 p.m., TNT. We've known that Grace (Holly Hunter) is complex — tough and fragile, smart and broken. She has little in common with her suburban-mom sister or her priest brother. Now we visit her American Indian grandfather (August Schellenberg). We hear about her wild teen years with her boyfriend, back before they became cops and he married someone else, but kept cheating with her. There's a pretty good murder case here, but the real power is in the personal story. A final scene is both passionate and painful, like Grace herself.

"America at a Crossroads: Inside America's Empire," 10 p.m., PBS. Trying to calm fresh trouble spots, the U.S. Army goes from here to Timbuktu — literally. We see soldiers in Timbuktu (in Mali), the Philippines, even Georgia of the former Soviet Union. Warfare and charity are juggled, in this moderately interesting documentary.

OF NOTE

"The Closer," 6 p.m., TNT. Here's the first half of the season finale. Brenda is investigating a case involving a big-time Hollywood divorce lawyer; meanwhile, she learns a secret about her boyfriend Fritz.

"Digging For the Truth: Neandertals," 6 p.m., History Channel. What happened to the once-thriving Neandertals? Why did the Cro-Magnons prevail? New co-host Zay Harding does get some interesting answers. In this show's style, however, we spend too much time in the search, sometimes slogging into dead ends.

"My Boys," 7 p.m., TBS. Here's a culture clash when the Chicago people make a rare trip to suburbia. They reluctantly go to the housewarming of PJ's brother, Andy.

"Prison Break," 7 and 8 p.m., Fox. In the first rerun, Michael confronts the evil president, played by Patricia Wettig; in the second, he and Linc barely escape from Chicago, but Sara doesn't.

"Kyle XY," 8 p.m., ABC Family. Kyle and Jessi are working together now, trying to learn about their roots.

"Two and a Half Men," 8 p.m., CBS. In a rerun, Jake has a big day at the track with Charlie — something his dad isn't happy about.

"Heroes," 8 p.m., NBC. In this rerun, Ted Sprague and Matt take the Bennets hostage.
