Honu, Sharks post victories

Stephen Chapman had three hits and two RBIs, and Jeramy Laster hit his fourth home run of the season as the North Shore Honu beat the West Oahu CaneFires, 8-4, yesterday in a Hawaii Winter Baseball game at Hans L'Orange Park.

Brad Corley also drove in two runs, and Lou Santangelo and Masahiro Nagata each added two hits for the Honu (8-4).

Jeff Bianchi, Russell Mitchell and Jamie Hoffman each had two hits for the CaneFires (2-9-1).

In the late game, Argenis Diaz had three hits and Brandon Snyder hit a two-run homer as the Honolulu Sharks (6-5-1) rolled to a 10-3 victory over the Waikiki BeachBoys (7-5).

Honolulu starter Takuya Furuya allowed two hits while striking out seven in five shutout innings to improve his record to 3-0 and lower his ERA to 1.93.

CROSS COUNTRY



HPU, HILO PREVAIL

Hawai'i Pacific — led by co-winners Brandon Laan and Jens Munk Nielsen — won the men's race while Hawai'i-Hilo — led by the second-place finish of Alejandra Sanchez — won the women's division at the UH-Hilo 6K Invitational.

Laan and Nielsen both clocked 19 minutes, 50 seconds to help HPU score 26 points. Hilo (29) was second and Chaminade (65) third.

Sanchez (24:29) finished behind Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Amanda Whitford (23:17) to help Hilo score 18 points. HPU (43) was second and Chaminade (59) third.


VOLLEYBALL

HILO 7-0 IN PACWEST

Josimara Pinheiro had 20 kills as Hawai'i-Hilo remained unbeaten in the Pacific West Conference with a 30-27, 30-25, 30-27 win over Brigham Young-Hawai'i last night at UH-Hilo gym.

Hillary Hurley added 10 kills and Laura Rodriguez 26 digs for Hilo (16-5 overall, 7-0 PacWest).

Agnes Tuilevuka had 10 kills for BYUH (9-8, 5-4).

Also yesterday:

  • Emily Evans had 12 kills as Notre Dame de Namur (7-13, 4-3) beat Chaminade (9-5, 2-4), 30-18, 30-24, 30-27, in a PacWest match at Belmont, Calif. Trina Kauliakamoa had 12 kills and 11 digs for Chaminade.

  • Kelly Balanay had 17 kills, Antje Buskies 16 and Cari Kahn 10 as Hawai'i Pacific (9-11) beat Dominican (7-7), 30-26, 30-27, 30-27, at St. Andrew's Priory gym. Gabby Pecora led Domincan with 13 kills.

    BYUH'S LI WINS TITLE

    Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Elwen Li beat second-seeded Johanna Dahlback of Armstrong Atlantic State, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, yesterday to win the NCAA II women's singles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Tournament in Mobile, Ala.
