Punahou's Snieder to Northwestern

Punahou senior Paul Snieder, a member of The Advertiser's All-State baseball team last season, has verbally committed to play at Northwestern University.

Snieder, a pitcher/infielder, had a 1.47 ERA in 38 innings and batted .354 (17 for 48) with two homers and 11 RBIs last season. He made The Advertiser's All-State team as a utility player.

The baseball season starts in early March, and the Buffanblu will be after their fifth consecutive state championship.

OIA SEEKS REFEREES

The O'ahu Basketball Referees Association is having an open house for individuals interested in officiating high school basketball.

The open house is scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Moanalua High School athletic department's room 202. The open house is also open to individuals with no experience or those interested in officiating youth and intermediate leagues.

The association is a nonprofit organization that officiates O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys and girls basketball games. All members will later attend mandatory sessions in rules, mechanics, and philosophy as well as on-court situations.

For current OBRA members, the first general meeting will be held Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at Moanalua.

VOLLEYBALL TRYOUT

The East O'ahu Boys Volleyball Club will hold a second free tryout session for boys from ages 13-15 years old.

This will be developmental and skills training. The tryouts will be held Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Star of the Sea School gym, 4469 Malia St.
