LANTERN FLOATING FESTIVAL MAY 28

The Shinnyo-en's ninth annual lantern floating festival, on Memorial Day at Ala Moana Beach Park, this year will include music by Keola Beamer, Natalie A'i Kamau'u and entertainment by the Hula Halau Olana A'i.

The 6:30 p.m. festival on May 28 is based on "toro nagashi," or the ritual of floating paper lanterns for visiting spirits. This unique Hawai'i event mixes two cultural icons: The American tradition of remembering loved ones on Memorial Day and the Japanese tradition, usually during obon season, of feeding the hungry ghosts and returning them to the great beyond by lighting the way with lanterns floated out to sea.

There will be free parking at the Hawai'i Convention Center, with shuttles to the service.
