Football coach June Jones and Rainbow Wahine volleyball coach Dave Shoji earned the most bonus money among University of Hawai'i-Manoa coaches for fall 2006, and could significantly top that if their teams hit the heights in play and in the stands for the final season of their current contracts.

Jones received $40,000 for having reached bonus standards in his contract and Shoji received $5,500, according to the school.

Jones, whose contract guarantees $800,016 per season — from combined athletic department funds and outside donations — received $20,000 for taking the Warriors to a non-Bowl Championship Series bowl game and $10,000 for winning that game.

UH defeated Arizona State, 41-24 in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl on Christmas Eve. The game was seen in 2.33 million households, according to ESPN, which aired the game. UH received approximately $400,000 for appearing in that game.

Jones also received $10,000 for being voted Western Athletic Conference coach of the year by his peers, after going 11-3.

Shoji, whose contract is listed at $135,000, received $2,500 for winning the WAC a ninth consecutive season and $3,000 for taking his team to an NCAA Regional.

Under terms of his contract, Jones stands to earn a $50,000 bonus if UH participates in a BCS bowl. Other provisions would pay him $20,000 for winning a WAC Championship, $20,000 for being named national coach of the year, $15,000 if season ticket sales reach 32,500 and an additional $15,000 should season tickets hit 40,000.

Last year UH sold less than 20,000 season tickets.

Shoji is scheduled to receive a raise to $140,004 effective July 1. Shoji, who has taken UH to four national championships, would earn $6,000 for a return to the NCAA final four and an additional $4,000 for winning the championship game. National coach of the year honors would add on $5,000.

In addition, Shoji would receive $5,000 if "regular, full-price admission" averages 6,000. For surpassing 7,000 he would earn an additional $5,000 and $5,000 more for hitting 8,500 in attendance.

UH average attendance was listed as 7,052 for 2006, including free and complimentary tickets.

Both Jones' and Shoji's contracts are scheduled to end June 30, 2008.
