Mililani trounces Kalani, 13-1

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Things didn't look too promising for Mililani's offense in the second inning against Kalani yesterday after the first two batters were retired.

But then the hit parade began for the Trojans and it didn't stop for a while.

Mililani scored eight runs in the second on six hits, two errors and two walks in a 13-1 victory over visiting Kalani in the quarterfinals of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinals.

"I told the kids it's just a matter of time because we have so much confidence in our offense right now," Mililani coach Dean Sato said.

Mililani, the West runner-up, improved to 9-2 and will face East champion Kailua in today's semifinals at Central O'ahu Regional Park. All semifinalists qualified for the state tournament.

"This is our goal, just to get to the dance because anything can happen," Sato said.

Kalani, the East's No. 3 team, dropped to 8-4 and will have to win two consecutive games to qualify for the state tournament.

Kylen Cadiam and Travis Jones each had two-run singles, Joshua Queja had a two-run double, and Joey Aquino and Richie Mariano each had run-scoring singles in the second against left-hander Shamus Kumashiro.

In all, Mililani sent 13 batters to the plate and all eight runs were unearned.

Kumashiro could have gotten out of the inning without any damage, but a fielding error by the shortstop loaded the bases. Then the flood gates opened.

"He must be the most hard luck guy," Kalani coach Shannon Hirai said. "He always pitches well. We just don't play defense for him or we don't hit for him."

Trojans right-hander Dustin Antolin allowed a single to center by Ridge Carpenter to open the game, and Jordan Sumida followed with a hit-and-run RBI double just inside the first-base line.

Antolin didn't allow another hit the rest of the way, but walked four — one intentionally — hit two batters and struck out two in a game halted after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

"I felt kind of worried at first, but I have faith in our team that we would come back," Antolin said.

Antolin threw 47 of his 77 pitches for strikes, and the Falcons were 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position against him.

The Trojans scored 11 runs with two outs, and were 9 of 18 with runners in scoring position.

"We practice that everyday," Sato said of two-out situations. "In fact, we end practice with two outs, runner at second and we try to cash in that one run. For them I'm very happy because on the momentum side, they pulled through."
