Jailed ex-HPD officer convicted of threatening tire shop owner

A former Honolulu police officer who is serving a 2 1/3-year federal prison term for a drug-related firearm case was found guilty yesterday of a misdemeanor of threatening a Waipahu tire business.

James L. Corn Jr. went on trial on a felony charge of first-degree terroristic threatening for allegedly threatening Larry Woodward of Larry's Discount Wheel and Tire on Feb. 21, 2005, related to a dispute over a tire Corn had purchased. Corn also was accused of later making two threatening phone calls.

Corn testified and denied making the threats.

After a day of deliberation, a Circuit Court jury found Corn guilty of the lesser misdemeanor offense of second-degree terroristic threatening.

The misdemeanor conviction meant the jury found that Corn made a threat on one occasion, rather than more than once, according to city Deputy Prosecutor Darrell Wong.

Circuit Judge Steven Alm scheduled sentencing for Aug. 27. The misdemeanor conviction carries a sentence of up to a year in jail.

Deputy Public Defender Edward Aquino said he will ask that any sentence imposed by Alm run at the same time as the federal prison term.

Wong said the state sentence will probably be concurrent with the federal sentence, but said he will check to see if he can seek a consecutive term.

Corn was arrested about six months after the Waipahu incident on a charge of receiving $1,000 to provide protection for an ice deal set up by undercover officers in a sting case. He resigned after his arrest.

Corn pleaded guilty to being a drug user in possession of firearms in exchange for the dismissal of the federal charge of providing protection.

At his sentencing last year, Corn admitted he had been addicted to cocaine.
