Ku'ikahi captures national volleyball title

Ku'ikahi Volleyball Club beat Onipa'a in an all-O'ahu final, 25-27, 25-19, 15-12, to capture the Boys' 15-Under Gold Club Division title of the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Championships yesterday at Atlanta, Ga.
Ku'ikahi went 9-0 in pool play, defeating teams from California, the Midwest and Canada. It then beat a team from Puerto Rico in the semifinals.
Tyler Tanaka and Scott Sakaida were named to the all-tournament team, and Joby Ramos was selected the tournament's MVP. Other Ku'ikahi team members were: Joshua Taylor, Logan Nowack, Ryan Leung, Jared Altenhof, West Hatae, Tyler Oshiro, Tyler Hodson and Chris Matsui. The team was coached by Josh Suapaia.

U.S. BEATS EGYPT
Libero Kawika Shoji had a team-high 15 digs as the U.S. Men's Junior National Team rallied past Egypt yesterday at the FIVB Men's Junior World Championships in Rabat, Morocco.
The U.S. team, captained by Honolulu's Shoji and Spencer McLachlin, prevailed 17-25, 26-28, 25-16, 25-22, 18-16. William Price had 24 points (21 kills, two blocks, one ace) and Matt Anderson 19 (17 kills, two aces) to lead Team USA. McLachlin added two kills.
Team USA will play Russia today. The Russians opened with a 28-26, 19-25, 27-25, 25-13 victory over Brazil.

CHANG SEES ACTION
Former Hawai'i quarterback Tim Chang came off the bench to complete 8 of 16 passes for 81 yards, but it was not nearly enough as the host Hamilton Tiger-Cats lost to the Toronto Argonauts, 30-5, in a Canadian Football League game last night.
Chang, who also rushed twice for 16 yards, replaced struggling veteran Jason Maas (4 of 11 for 40 yards) in the second quarter and had fans excited in the third period when he guided Hamilton to the Argos' 5-yard line. But the Tiger-Cats (0-2) had to settle for a field goal that made it 22-5.
SWIMMING
FLANAGAN, CHOI WIN
This time, John Flanagan turned the tables on Noa Sakamoto.
Flanagan, who was edged out by Sakamoto in the Raging Isle Sprint by seven-tenths of a second on June 23, beat Sakamoto by two seconds yesterday to win the Cholo's 2000 Swim.
Flanagan swam the 1.2-mile course around the perimeter of Waimea Bay in 23 minutes, 36.1 seconds to capture the second leg of the North Shore Swim Series. Sakamoto finished in 23:38.2, followed by Kekoa Taparra in 25:19.6.
Shanelle Choi won the open women's division in 27:59.5, followed by Nicole Hagi (28:05.3) and Gail Grabowsky (28:13.3).
FENCING
LEARN FROM MASTER
For those with a soft spot for swords, former world fencing champion Sergei Golubitsky will be in Honolulu for a series of "master" classes this weekend.
Golubitsky, 37, is the only person to win the World Championship three years in a row (1997, '98 and '99). He captured 19 World Cup tournaments and has finished the season as international points leader five times. He won a silver medal at the 1992 Olympics.
Clinics run from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants must have prior fencing experience and their own fencing gear, and pre-register. Spectators can watch for free.

Classes are expected to include conditioning and warm-up, stretching, fencing footwork, fencing bladework, bouting, and video analysis.
Golubitsky is from the Ukraine and competed for the former Soviet Union. He now lives in Europe and is making his first trip to Hawai'i.
