UH's Sheppard wins at WAC track

University of Hawai'i sophomore Emily Sheppard won gold in the high jump on the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship yesterday at Nampa, Idaho.
Sheppard cleared a school-record 5 feet, 9 3/4 inches.
UH stands in fourth place with 25.5 points behind Cal State Northridge (53), Boise State (38), and Louisiana Tech (37). The meet concludes today.

HAWAI'I TOPS UC IRVINE
Angela Turnbull scored three goals and fourth-ranked Hawai'i defeated No. 9 UC Irvine, 6-5, yesterday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match at Irvine, Calif.
Kelly Mason and Lisa van Raalte added one goal apiece as the Rainbow Wahine (7-4 overall, 5-2 MPSF) snapped the Anteaters (7-2, 1-1) three-match win streak.
Hawai'i goalie Meike De Nooy had nine saves.
GOLF
BYU WINS BY 8 STROKES
The University of Hawai'i and UH-Hilo men's golf teams finished finished 18th and 20th, respectively, at the John Burns Intercollegiate yesterday at the Leilehua Golf Course.
BYU (270—834) won the 22-team, 54-hole event by eight strokes over Nevada-Las Vegas (288—842). Hawai'i shot (290—883) and UH-Hilo (297—899).
Southern Methodist's Frank Wrenn (69—203) won the individual title by one stroke over BYU's Jake Ellison (66—204).
UH-Hilo's Logan Goulding (70—217) was the top local finisher. He tied for 38th.
WEIGHTLIFTING
O'AHU TITLES ON LINE
Thirteen weightlifters will compete in the O'ahu Open Olympic Weightlifting Competition today at the Ward Warehouse stage area.
Expected to compete are Kyle Yamauchi, who won the 2003 Junior Nationals at 136 pounds, and 17-year-old James Moser Jr., who won the 2006 USA National Junior Competition at 231 pounds. The event begins at 3 p.m.

TWO EX-'BOWS DRAFTED
The Amsterdam Admirals yesterday selected former University of Hawai'i players Tanuvasa "T.J." Moe and Abraham Elimimian in the 2007 NFL Europa free agent draft.
Moe, a long-snapper/linebacker, was selected in the fifth round, and Elimimian, a cornerback, who played for the Admirals last year, was picked in the 13th round.
They will report to training camp in two weeks.
