Governor releases funds to finish college's center

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle has released nearly $8 million in construction money for the second and final phase of the One-Stop Center at Kaua'i Community College.

Phase I of the center is under construction and will include space for student services, the University Center and business operations. Phase II will be adjacent to Phase I and will provide a permanent facility for classrooms for the Office of Continuing Education and Training and the campus bookstore.

The Office of Continuing Education and Training, or OCET, manages all noncredit training courses, international programs, the apprenticeship training program and the performing arts center.

At present, the office operates out of portable buildings and borrowed classrooms and does not have space to grow. During the 2006-2007 academic year, OCET enrolled more than 1,700 students in 156 different classes.

Construction of Phase I of the One-Stop Center is scheduled to be completed in May 2008. Construction of Phase II is scheduled to begin in April 2008 and be completed in June 2009.
