Murray wins discus

University of Hawai'i senior Novelle Murray won the discus event at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational yesterday with a season-best throw of 178 feet, 10 inches in La Jolla, Calif.

In other top-10 finishes by the Rainbow Wahine, Chantelle Laan placed fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11 minutes, 14.88 seconds and 10th in the 1,500-meter run in 4:41.30; Thalia Amanakis finished eighth in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.54 seconds, and Annett Wichmann placed 10th in the javelin with 142-5.


TENNIS

LAJOLA FALLS IN SEMIS

Fifth-seeded Rhyne Williams of Knoxville, Tenn., defeated fourth-seeded Dennis Lajola of 'Aiea, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6, yesterday in the International Tennis Federation Boys 18-and-under National Championships at Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Williams will face third-seeded Johnny Hamui of Wesley Chapel, Fla., in today's final.

Lajola, who will play for the University of Hawai'i next season, lost in the final last year.


GOLF

UH PLACES 10TH

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team capped its regular season yesterday with a 10th-place finish in the 19-team Ping Golf Cougar Classic at Provo, Utah.

Host BYU won with 32-under 832. UH shot 15-over 879.

Pierre-Henri Soero led UH with 69—217, finishing in a tie for 28th. BYU's Daniel Summerhays won with 67—205.


BEACH VOLLEYBALL

2-FOR-2 ON TOUR

Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers defeated Sean Rosenthal and Jake Gibb, 21-14, 21-16, yesterday in Dallas to win their second consecutive tournament on the AVP Tour this season.

On Friday, the top-seeded team of Hawai'i's Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger were ousted from the event after losing in the contender's bracket, 21-18, 21-10, to Brent Doble and Ty Loomis.
