Roosevelt's Iwalani Rodrigues soared for a shot over Kalani's Kacie Gushiken as Chloe Martin attempted a block from behind during the first half of last night's OIA game at McKinley's gym.

A lights-out shooting performance by Roosevelt last night helped the Rough Riders run past and hold off Kalani, 63-50, in a key O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball showdown at McKinley's Student Council Gym.

A vocal crowd of about 1,000 and live TV audience watched Roosevelt, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, remain unbeaten at 10-0 in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division, while the No. 5-ranked Falcons fell to 8-2.

Four different Rough Riders combined for eight 3-pointers and Roosevelt made 19 of 24 free throws (79.2 percent) as Kalani was never able to take the lead.

"We were nervous because it was on TV, but tonight being nervous was a good thing," said Rough Riders junior guard Iwalani Rodrigues, who finished with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. "Everybody came out to play, and we shot the ball well."

After Kalani closed it to 25-23 with 1:05 remaining in the first half, Tasia Kamakawiwo'ole sank two free throws with 31.5 seconds left and Dianna Zane hit a short runner at the buzzer to give Roosevelt a 29-23 lead at the break.

The Rough Riders continued their hot shooting in the third period, extending the lead to 49-30 after Tiyana Nakasone's 3-pointer with 52 seconds remaining.

Roosevelt hit all eight of its 3-pointers in the first three quarters, with Tiana Sugui swishing three, Nakasone and Zane hitting two each and Jayna Tasaka making one.

"We had a good game shooting," Rough Riders coach Bobby Keanini said. "Everybody was hitting, and when we play like that, we're pretty good."

The Falcons staged a comeback in the final period, closing it to 56-49 after Courtney Gaddis' two free throws with 1:31 remaining. Gaddis then made a steal on the ensuing possession and drove the length of the court, but was called for a charge as she collided with a Roosevelt defender while going up for the shot.

The call shocked the Kalani bench and cheering section, since the defender did not appear to be close to establishing legal guarding position.

So instead of Gaddis (19 points, including 9 of 12 from the line) having a chance to cut it to 56-51 with about 80 seconds left, the Rough Riders kept the seven-point lead and gained possession. They out-scored the Falcons 7-1 the rest of the way.

"That was a big call, a game-changer," Keanini said. "It really helped us."

Kalani coach Darold Imanaka said there were many disputable calls and non-calls throughout the night, and he questioned the game assignment of the less-experienced officials.

But he gave credit to Roosevelt's shooting display.

"They were hot and they were bombing threes," Imanaka said. "You have to give them that."
