TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Hope & Faith" return, 7:30 p.m., ABC. During its three seasons, this lightweight comedy has been kind of fun. However, ABC has been yanking it round. Now it's back, re-linking Kelly Ripa (Faith) with her real-life husband Mark Consuelos. He plays Gooch, who left to play baseball in Japan. Now he's back and says he has a Zen lifestyle, avoiding cars, cell phones, baseball and sex. She's displeased about that last detail.

"The Shield" 90-minute season finale, 8 and 9:30 p.m., FX. All season, the clever Kavanaugh (Forest Whitaker) has been cornering Lemansky to get at Vic (Michael Chiklis). Threatened with death behind bars, there's now a plan for Lem to slip out of the country. Kavanaugh and Aceveda are convinced it's Vic's scheme and want to convict him. Meanwhile, Dutch is still fuming at Claudette and wants a transfer. And Danny finally confronts her baby's father.

OF NOTE

"American Idol," 7 p.m., Fox. Last week, viewers logically ousted Melissa McGhee. Much less logically, two top contenders — the talented Lisa Tucker and the handsome Ace Young — were with her in the bottom three. Both get a chance to bounce back tonight when the 11 survivors return.

"NCIS," 7 p.m., CBS. Here's a rerun of the episode in which Tony and Ziva were found by smugglers and imprisoned in a container. Their colleagues race to find them.

"Blow Out," 7 p.m., Bravo. A new season follows Jonathan Antin, the hard-driving hairstylist and businessman. Fatherhood has mellowed him a bit, but he's still outrageous. That's obvious when he ignores his client's wishes during a photo shoot.

"The Unit," 8 p.m., CBS. After their church has been destroyed, missionaries in Indonesia are hiding and praying for a rescue.

"Sons & Daughters," 8 and 8:30 p.m., ABC. The first episode has some dandy moments. Cameron needs to borrow money from his sister, Sharon — whose husband, Don, is currently obsessed with his role in a bad play. Meanwhile, Cameron's other sister, Jenna, may finally get child-support money from Whitey, who has a job with Don. That job soon self-destructs in a perversely funny scene. In the second episode, Cameron doesn't seem supportive of his wife's education or of Jenna's singing.

"Boston Legal," 9 p.m., ABC. Shirley's ex-husband (Tom Selleck) is back. He married on a recent episode, but he still obsesses on her.
