Two big names have surfaced as potential casino builders on or near the Las Vegas Strip. Rolling Stone magazine may consider licensing its name to developers who own Alexis Park, a noncasino hotel about a mile east of the Strip. The final product would be a $500 million rock 'n' roll hotel-casino and concert venue. The second source of speculation involves an investor who has obtained the exclusive rights to Elvis Presley's name and likeness. The next step in the process could be an Elvis-themed megaresort built on the Strip. A consequence of this project could be to ban Elvis impersonators not affiliated with the developer.
MONORAIL STRUGGLES: The Las Vegas Strip Monorail posted its worst passenger-month in January. The total of 18,200 paying riders was more than 4,000 below its previous worst month, January 2004.
Q. How big an upset of odds was it for "Crash" to win the best-picture Academy Award?
A. "Brokeback Mountain" was a strong 1-4.5 favorite, meaning a bet of $100 would win only about $22.25. Betting $100 on "Crash" at +670 would have paid $670. So it was a fairly big upset. Bets on the Academy Awards are not permitted in Nevada.
