"American Masters: Bob Dylan: No Direction Home," 9 p.m., PBS; concludes Tuesday. The notion of profiling Bob Dylan seems both fascinating and futile. Here is someone who keeps changing his persona and his version of the truth. How can we watch a biography of him? Just settle back and enjoy the scamp-like quality. Relive some of Dylan's more audacious moments. Watch him confound friends and toy with clueless interviewers. Savor a story that goes from a frigid Hibbing, Minn., to Greenwich Village and beyond. Director Martin Scorsese has fresh interviews with key people — including lots from Dylan — plus a rich assortment of concert footage. And as Dylan performs, we can catch some strange, scattered moments of genius.

OF NOTE

"Arrested Development," 7 p.m., Fox. Charlize Theron, the Oscar-winning movie star, begins a five-episode stay on this oft-witty series. Michael meets her while investigating the possibility that Englishmen framed his father.

"How I Met Your Mother," 7:30 p.m., CBS. Last week's witty debut had Ted (Josh Radnor) in the future telling his bored teenagers how he met their mom. It was a wonderful tale filled with wild detours between Ted and a quick-witted beauty (Cobie Smulders). Only at the end of the half-hour did the kids learn this wasn't their mom. It was "Aunt Robin." Tonight, Ted throws a party.

"Out of Practice," 8:30 p.m., CBS. Last week's witty debut had hapless Ben (Christopher Gorham), the only nondoctor in his family, learning that his wife had left him. Tonight, he might chase after her.

"Medium," 9 p.m., NBC. Don't you hate it when a song sticks in your head? For Allison, it might be a clue.
