Kaua'i surfers Andy Irons and Keala Kennelly each placed second in the 33rd annual Surfer Magazine Poll Awards.

Irons, the three-time defending world champion, finished second in the voting for top male surfer, behind Florida's Kelly Slater.

Bruce Irons, Andy's younger brother, placed third. The Irons brothers were the only Hawai'i surfers to finish in the top 10.

"It's funny because depending on the day or where we are, my favorite surfer is either Andy or Bruce," said Slater, who has won the Surfer Poll 11 times.

Kennelly finished second in the voting for top female surfer, behind current world champion Sofia Mulanovich of Peru. Another Kaua'i surfer, Rochelle Ballard, placed third.

Results of the poll were announced on Tuesday at a formal banquet in Anaheim, Calif.

More than 20,000 people participated in the voting.

Bruce Irons also won the award for Best Performance in a Video for his surfing in "The Bruce Movie."

Jamie O'Brien of O'ahu's North Shore won the award for Breakthrough Performer.

Big-wave surfer Shane Dorian of the Big Island won the Guts for Glory award.
