Don Murphy of Murphy's Bar & Grill will hold a New Orleans-style block party today to help raise money for New Orleans families.

The event will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the corner of Nu'uanu Avenue and Merchant Street.

Murphy said that Mardi Gras style, Gulf Coast food will be a major part of the evening's festivities, which will deliver funds to the University of New Orleans basketball program, along with other key national organizations in the rebuilding of New Orleans.

University of New Orleans was a University of Hawai'i basketball opponent in recent years.

Murphy is a friend of New Orleans coach Monte Towe.

"We got to know one another when they played here," Murphy said. "I had learned that he's moved his program to University of Texas at Tyler to get through the coming season while the student-athletes continue classes."
