Djou to offer bill dropping gas tax

Honolulu councilman Charles Djou (Waikiki, East Honolulu), yesterday said he planned to introduce a measure to temporarily suspend the city's 16 1/2-cent gasoline tax. Djou joins Gov. Linda Lingle, Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa and state Sen. Fred Hemmings in calling for a moratorium on gasoline taxes.


HOKU SCIENTIFIC SHARES UP 24%

Shares of Honolulu-based Hoku Scientific Inc. rose 24 percent yesterday after two brokerage firms initiated coverage of the company with an outperform rating.

Hoku stock closed up $1.48 at $7.60 on the Nasdaq National Market. The company makes fuel-cell membranes.


REAL-TIME VOICE MESSAGE OFFERED

Hawaiian Telcom will offer a new service called Call Choice, which allows users to listen to cell phone voice messages in real time. The user can then decide whether to interrupt the message and take the call.

Users also can transfer a cell phone call to a home or office phone to conserve monthly minutes or automatically transfer cell phone calls to a landline when a phone is turned off. The service is available starting in mid-October. A full commercial roll-out is expected in the first quarter of 2006.

CORAL WIRELESS NOW MOBI PCS

Honolulu-based Coral Wireless announced it officially changed its name to Mobi PCS.

The wireless phone company plans to offer customers on O'ahu unlimited local and long distance calling plans for under $50 in early 2006.
