Morishima retires with bench-press record

Ed Morishima Jr. of Hawai'i Kai capped his weightlifting career in record-setting fashion yesterday at the World Association of Benchpressers and Deadlifters championships in Reno, Nev.
Morishima, 43, bench-pressed 563 pounds to win the 198-pound open division and set a world record in the masters (ages 40 to 46) division.
"I felt pretty confident," said Morishima, who retires as a five-time world champion. "I wanted to close out my career with a world record."
He broke the mark of 562 set by George Herring in 2002.
The competition drew more than 650 lifters from around the world.
GOLF
ISHII IN TIE FOR 36TH
Hawai'i's David Ishii dropped into a tie for 36th after shooting a 1-over-par 73 yesterday in the fourth round of the Champions Tour Qualifying School.
The tournament is being played at PGA Southern California Golf Club. The low seven after tomorrow's sixth round receive playing privileges for 2006. The next eight get conditional privileges.
Ishii is at 295, 10 shots back of the leader and five out of the top 15. He played the front nine in 2-under yesterday, but double bogeyed No. 11 and was 3-over on the back.
Steve Veriato, who grew up in Hilo, made the 72-hole cut and is tied for 56th at 70—301.
SEKI FAILS TO ADVANCE
Punahou graduate Jim Seki finished in 64th at the PGA Tour Qualifying School's Second Stage event in Seaside, Calif., and did not advance to the final.
Seki shot 73—303 at Bayonet Golf Course. The medalist shot 281 and the low 19 and ties that moved on were at 289 or better.
HAMAMOTO TAKES LEAD
Hilo amateur Jarett Hamamoto shot a 3-under 69 yesterday to take a two-stroke lead in the Prince Resorts Hawai'i State Open at the Mauna Kea Resort course on Big Island.
Kevin Shimomura is second at 71—143. Dean Prince (74) and Kirk Smith (75) share the lead in senior flight at 145, and Waiakea senior Christine Kim leads the women's flight with 74—153.
DIVING
SECOND GOLD FOR HUANG
University of Hawai'i All-American QiongJie Huang won the 3-meter springboard title yesterday at the Indiana Collegiate Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
The senior from Wen Zhou, Zhe Jiang Province in China, who won the 1-meter event Friday, amassed 344.35 points in beating a field of 12 divers.
UH junior Megan Farrow finished third with 316.03 and senior All-American Rui Wang placed fifth with 306.60.
In the men's 1-meter springboard, UH sophomore Mats Wiktorsson finished fifth with 305.05.
SAILING
UH SOPHOMORE SIXTH
University of Hawai'i sophomore Tinja Anderson-Mitterling placed sixth in the ICSA/Vanguard Singlehanded Nationals at Ke'ehi Lagoon yesterday.
Anderson-Mitterling scored 118 points in the 16-race, two-day event, including a first-place finish in the 12th race. Yale's Molly Carapiet scored a low-best 54 points to place first in the 16-woman field.
Georgetown's Andrew Campbell won the men's title with 64 points.
TENNIS
TOP SEED GAINS FINAL
Top-seeded Wayne Odesnik defeated seventh-seeded Jesse Witten, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, yesterday to advance to the final of the USTA's Honolulu Futures Tournament at the UH courts.
Odesnik, who turns 20 tomorrow, will play 18-year-old Sam Querrey for the championship today at 9 a.m. Querrey beat Alex Clayton, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-3, in yesterday's other semifinal.
Today's winner earns $1,985 and 18 ATP ranking points.
