MAKIKI WAI HELPERS — The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and Hawai'i Nature Center are looking for help Saturday to make trail improvements, remove weeds and plant native plants along the Makiki trail, as part of the Makiki Wai (Watershed Awareness Initiative). Water, gloves, and tools provided; bring long pants and long-sleeve shirt; shoes or boots; insect repellent and lunch. KA IWI COAST CLEANUP — Join the Sierra Club 8:30-10:30 a.m. Jan. 1 for a cleanup of the Ka Iwi coastline. Bring water, hat and sunscreen; bags, gloves will be provided. Meet at the east restroom at Sandy Beach Park. Call Lisa Keala Carter at 722-8727 or Randy Ching at 942-0145.

PRESERVE KA'ENA POINT — Join Sierra Club from Jan. 7 in a service project to protect coastal ecosystem at Ka'ena Point Natural Area Reserve by removing invasive plants. Call 538-6616 or see www.hi.sierraclub.org.

ADOPT-A-BEACH CLEANUP — Volunteers are needed Jan. 14 for a beach cleanup at Chun's Reef, sponsored by Save The Sea Turtles International, Adopt-A-Beach Hawai'i, the National Recycling Coalition, Hale'iwa Joe's, Surf & Sea, Breaker's Hale'iwa and Turtle Bay Resorts. Meet at noon at 61-529 Kamehameha Highway; trash bags, gloves, water provided; bring hat, sunscreen, beach shoes. WEED & POT CLUB — Maui Nui Botanical Garden's Weed & Pot Club meets 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays at 150 Kanaloa Ave. in Kahului to weed, rake, trim or transplant nursery plants and perform other work. Tools, gloves and drinking water provided; bring sunscreen, wear shoes.

KANAHA WILDLIFE REFUGE — Weekly volunteer workdays at Maui's Kanaha Pond Wildlife Refuge, 7:30 a.m. Thursdays. Call (808) 572-6338.

MORNING TRAIL SWEEPERS — Lyon Arboretum in Manoa seeks early morning walkers to hike the arboretum trails, clearing fallen palm fronds and other debris from paths. Call volunteer coordinator Jill Laughlin at 988-0461. The arboretum also holds volunteer workdays on the first Saturday of the month.

WILIWILI SEED PROJECT — Lyon Arboretum needs volunteers to prepare seeds for storage, as part of its Wiliwili Seed Conservation Project in response to the spread of gall wasps. Training will be provided. Contact Jill Laughlin at 988-0461.
