A grand field taking shape for Po'ipu

By Bill Kwon

David Duval became the third qualifier for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at the Po'ipu Bay Resort Golf Course Nov. 20-21 with his major breakthrough victory in the British Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Sunday.

He will join Masters winner Tiger Woods and U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen with the PGA champion next month in Atlanta rounding out the elite foursome.

"For the last six years, Duval has been one of the top players in the world. He's been close a number of times. It's nice to see a new face here, nice to have him as our third player," said Michael Castillo, Po'ipu Bay's director of golf.

Both Woods and Duval will represent the United States in the World Cup in Japan the week before the Grand Slam event involving the winners of golf's four major championships.

"They'll probably fly in together," said Castillo. "Retief will also be playing the World Cup for South Africa. If Ernie Els wins the PGA Championship, it'll be South Africa against the USA in the Grand Slam."

In event Woods, Goosen or Duval wins the PGA Championship, an alternate will be selected.

Through the British Open, heading the alternate list with 178.2 points is Vijay Singh with Els second with 152.3 points. Bernard Langer is third at 146.8, followed by Mark Calcavecchia (146) and Mark Brooks (141).

Only previous winners of major championships are eligible as alternates.
