Local juniors to test skills against some of world's best Advertiser Staff Players from a dozen states and five countries are entered in the third annual World Junior Masters, July 3-5, at Mililani Golf Club. Early commitments have come from Erik Flores, a Californian rated No. 1 in his age group (13-15) in the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings, and Christo Greyling, No. 8 in 16-18. Greyling, originally from South Africa, lives in Orlando, Fla. Other notable entrants include Ireland's Rory McCory (10-12 age group) and David Miles from Texas, who will play in the youngest bracket (7-9). Leilehua's Nick Mason, who finished third in the state high school championships, is among the local entries, along with Maui's Joan Shimozaki. Wai'anae's Earl Medeiros and Casey Kobashigawa, who won his age division two years ago, are also entered, as are Ryan Kuroiwa, Michael Sato and Ashley Yamaguchi, a defending champion. Age division winners receive a Junior Masters jacket. The tournament was started in 1999 by Mark Kalilikane to provide local juniors enhanced competition at home. All age divisions play Tuesday and Wednesday, July 3-4. Players 13 and older, who survive the 36-hole cut, have a third round Thursday. Junior World: Many of the state's finest juniors are playing in the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association Junior World qualifiers this week on Kaua'i. More than 200 golfers between the ages of 7-17 are attempting to qualify for 41 spots at Wailua and Kaua'i Lagoons Mokihana. Kira-Ann Murashige, Stephanie Kono, Kimberly Kim and Kaira Marta, who won trophies at last year's Junior World Championship, earned exempt invitations. The 34th annual Junior Worlds will be July 17-20, on seven courses in San Diego. Last year, nearly 1,000 players from 43 states and 40 countries qualified.
