Lehman first pro lined up to participate with juniors

Former British Open champion Tom Lehman, who finished second in this year's Sony Open in Hawai'i, is the first to commit to play in the new First Hawaiian Bank Pro-Junior Golf Challenge.

The challenge replaces the Johnny Bellinger Shoot-Out the Tuesday before the tournament. It will feature six PGA pros and six Hawai'i junior golfers, over six holes.

The junior players will be determined after the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association Tournament of Champions, Dec. 1-2 at Wailea. The winners of the girls and boys 15-18 divisions will earn spots, along with the Players of the Year in that age bracket and two at-large choices.

The 2002 Sony Open will be Jan. 10-13 at Waialae Country Club. For information, or to volunteer, call 523-7888 or visit sonyopeninhawaii.com.

The Golf Club is broadcast statewide Saturday mornings.

Others include Mark Calcavecchia, Brad Faxon, Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia, Justin Leonard, Davis Love III, Shigeki Maruyama, Jesper Parnevik and Hal Sutton. • Surf for juniors: Monday, the World Golf Foundation (WGF) launched Juniorlinks.com, a web site for kids, their parents and junior golf program administrators supported by the golf community.

The internet site (www.juniorlinks.com) was created to offer a master database of junior golf programs in the United States.

Junior programs can register on the site.

Young golfers and their parents will be able to search the database for the most appropriate program in their area.

The WGF and the U.S. Golf Association Foundation developed juniorlinks.com.

Juniorlinks.com will be launched in phases. In its first phase, juniorlinks.com will focus on registering junior programs through an online registration process.

It will also feature information on a wide range of subjects from Rules, the environment, swing tips and college scholarship information.

Future phases of juniorlinks.com will include "best practices" from junior programs around the country and a forum for junior golf administrators to communicate with each other so their programs can improve and grow.
