- Hole No. 9, 151 yards, 8-iron
On Father's Day weekend I took my 14-year-old son on an afternoon flight to Maui.
Our flight was delayed and we didn't get to the course until 3:30 p.m.
At check-in, the pro told us we would not be able to finish the round.
That was fine with us, it was a beautiful day and my son had just re-kindled his interest in golf and was anxious to tee it up.
We played as a twosome, and did not see another group until the ninth hole, where two men were teeing off on the 10th tee, adjacent to the ninth green.
I pulled an 8-iron; hit the shot and watched as it took two hops and dived into the hole.
My son jumped into my arms, and the group on the 10th tee started screaming.
The course marshal heard the roar, and came up to congratulate me and get my information.
He told me that the pro shop would have a souvenir of the occasion waiting.
He also reminded us that it was late and we would not be able to complete the round. The men who witnessed the shot said to heck with that, and let us join them.
The marshal went on ahead to clear the way for us. We finished, playing the last nine in about 45 minutes.
Having your first hole-in-one after 25 years of playing golf, on a beautiful Maui afternoon, with your son, on Father's Day weekend . . . it just doesn't get any better than that.
