Hawai'i Course of the Week

WAIMEA COUNTRY CLUB
No. 7 I 501 yards, par 5

Waimea Country Club, in upcountry Big Island, opened in 1994. Architect John Sanford Jr. gave it a Scottish links-style layout with views of both the Pacific Ocean and Mauna Kea. With an elevation of nearly 3,000 feet, it offers a cooler and comfortable climate to play. Waimea is one of the few courses in Hawai'i with bent grass greens, because of the cooler temperatures.

One of the favorite holes is the par-5 seventh. It is reachable in two shots for long hitters, but requires a solid approach to clear water running down the left side and in front of the green. An accurate lay-up shot down the fairway will result in a short iron to the green. The green is steeply sloped, and difficult to par.

• Waimea Country Club (72, 6,661) i 47-5220 Mamalahoa Highway, Kamuela, HI 96743. 885-8777. Head Pro: Mike McCoy. Semi-private. Green fees: Kama'aina $40, non-resident $65, non-resident senior $40.
