Women in Golf Day set at Kane'ohe course Advertiser Staff American Golf's annual Women in Golf Day will be celebrated in Hawai'i on May 19, at Ko'olau Golf Club in Kane'ohe. The event is designed to introduce women to golf in a fun, non-intimidating environment. Registration and refreshments are from 8 a.m.-9 a.m., followed by free instruction and demonstrations from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. There will be contests and raffle prizes after, with donations going to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Activities are open to females 14 and older, of all skill levels. Clubs will be available for beginners. Discounted lesson packages, merchandise discounts and other benefits are part of the program. Call 247-7088 for information. Ko'olau is one of 200 private, resort and daily fee golf courses operated by American Golf across the country. The Women in Golf program was started to increase opportunities for women to learn and play golf. Women represent the fastest growing segment of the golf industry, comprising nearly half of the new golfers. Free workshops: The Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association, with a grant from the U.S. Golf Association, is sponsoring a series of free workshops for beginning golfers. Women and girls are eligible to participate. Workshops will cover simple rules, etiquette, equipment and club formation. There will also be professional instruction. Classes will be Saturdays, from 8:15 a.m. to noon. Players are encouraged to bring their own clubs and shoes, if possible. The schedule: May 26, at Wailea Golf Club; Aug. 18, at Poipu Bay; Aug. 25, at Leilehua; Sept. 15, at Olomana; Oct. 13, at Waikoloa King's; and, Nov. 10, at Hilo Muni. Pro and championship flights will play at Kapalua Village, Elleair Maui and Wailea Gold; A flight at Wailea Blue, Pukalani, Elleair Maui; and, B flight at Sandalwood, Dunes at Maui Lani and Pukalani. Entry fees are $200 (pros), $190 (championship), $180 (A) and $170 (B). Proceeds to benefit Maui Nisei Veterans Memorial Center. Entry deadline is May 15. For information: 205-0582. Turtle Bay Pro-Am: Amateurs can form their own four-person teams for the inaugural Turtle Bay Championship Pro-Am. The event is prior to the $1.5 million PGA Senior Tour event, to be played Oct. 5-7 at the Links at Kuilima. The Pro-Am will be Oct. 3-4. SHORT PUTTS: Po'ipu Bay's Golf Shop was recognized as one of "America's 100 Best Golf Shops" for 2001 in February's Golf World Business magazine. It was the fifth time the shop has been honored. ... Wailea Golf Club is offering two kama'aina specials that began Monday. The first allows four Hawai'i residents to play for the price of three ($180 per foursome at the Gold and Emerald courses and $165 at the Blue). Also, there is a $45 rate after noon daily on the Blue Course. Specials are valid through Dec. 21. |
