University of Hawaii football coaches woke up this morning to some good news.
By the time they arrived at their offices at 6 a.m., they had received faxed copies of letters of intent from five recruits. Today is the first day football recruits may put their commitments in writing. The NCAA considers faxed copies to be binding agreements.
"It feels good to be a Warrior," said Zach Masch, a defensive tackle from Arizona Western (Junior) College. Masch turned down a football scholarship from UCLA.
He said is wearing a UH T-shirt today.
Against a backdrop of a UH flag, slotback Deondre Powell of Gahr High School in California signed his letter of intent.
Joey Iosefa of Fagaitua High in American Samoa also signed his letter early this morning.
In all, the Warriors received more than 20 written commitments by mid-day.
Wideout Rodney Bradley, offensive tackle Brett Leonard, defensive tackle
David Hafoka, and defensive backs Lametrius Davis and Melvin "Tank" Hopkins
already are enrolled at UH. They spent the morning competing in a dodgeball
tournament that is part of the Warriors' offseason conditioning program.
