Newsletters
The Kapalakiko Productions Calendar
A quarterly newsletter about Hawaii-related events around the world, stories about kama'aina and play dates for Hawaii entertainers on tour. Published by the Kapalakiko Band and production company in San Francisco; band members hail from Oahu and Waiakea. Domestic subscription rate is a $10 donation; international subscription, $50 donation. Call (415) 468-7125.
East Coast newsletter
An annual newsletter by former Honolulu resident Kulani Purdy, now of Jersey City, N.J., contains information on nearly 20 Hawaii-related major events on the East Coast. Write him at Polynesian Registry, 157 Chestnut Ave., Jersey City, NJ 07306. (The newsletter is free, but Purdy welcomes donations to help with publication and postage.)
Hawaii Groups
The Mainland Council of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs has branches in California, Utah, Colorado, Nevada and Alaska. Call Victor Kaiwi Pang at (714) 968-1785 or e-mail him at kaiwipang@qnet.com.
The Hawaiian Inter-Club Council of Southern California is an umbrella organization for groups with Hawaii ties. The council's website at www.hiccsc.org has links to member clubs, including sports groups, civic organizations and halau.
Wahi Ku Moku - Boston Hawaiian Club has been been established since 1994 and includes over 100 members who live in the Greater Boston area. The group holds monthly potluck pa'inas (parties) and sends out a quarterly newsletter. Visit bostonhawaiianclub.org for information.
Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club provides information and fellowship for Hawaiians and Hawaiians-at-heart in Las Vegas and surrounding areas. The group gathers every fourth Sunday of the month for a pot luck and general membership meeting. The group's Web site is www.lvhcc.org. You can also e-mail organizers at lvhcc@aol.com.
Alumni Associations
The University of Hawai'i maintains alumni organizations in other states and countries. Chapters include Arizona, East (New York), Las Vegas/Southern Nevada, Los Angeles/Orange County, Pacific Northwest (Seattle), San Francisco, San Diego, Beijing, Hong Kong and Tokyo. More are planned. Call the UH Alumni Affairs office in Honolulu at (808) 956-2586.
College Hawaii Clubs
Many colleges, particularly those on the West Coast, feature a Hawaii club. Call the student government or student activities office of the college. Many clubs welcome participation in events by Hawaii expatriates who didn’t attend the college.
Web Sites
OhanaNet - Hawaiian Style Internet, an online community, offers free e-mail and homepages to stay in touch with family and friends. Free listings for businesses and organizations and kama'aina rates on the products and services. For more information, go to www.ohananet.com.
Vegashawaii.com. A site for former Hawaii residents who are now living in Las Vegas. It lists Hawaiian events and Hawaiian-style businesses located in Las Vegas and other features. www.vegashawaii.com
Radio Shows
Aloha Joe is a Hawaiian music show broadcast on Saturdays at 7 a.m. Pacific Standard Time. It is heard on cable TV, satellite and the Internet through Broadcast America.com. For more information, go to www.alohajoe.com.
Las Vegas' Guy Perez and Tama Silva of Island Kine Radio's Waia'au Brothers host a Hawaiian music talk show on KLAV 1230 AM. You can listen to them live online at www.klav1230am.com every Sunday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Las Vegas time.
Internet Radio Hawai`i offers streaming Hawaiian music, news and other features at http://irh.com.
