Toshiya Sakashima

Age: 17

Lived alone with his mother in Uwajima City. He worked in construction and at the city fish markets to help support them. For a present, he once gave a classmate a pirzed yellowtail fish.

Yusuke Terata

Age: 17

Loved animals, especially fish. When he visited Toyko on a school trip last year, he was disappointed that the group did not get to see the Parasite Museum, which is filled with exhibits of parasites and a famous display of giant tapeworks. He planned to be a veterinarian.

Takeshi Mizuguchi

Age: 17

Loved computers and Japanese animation. His friends considered him a walking encyclopedia of Japanese animation. He was at the top of his class in ocean engineering and told friends he dreamed of going to college.

Katsuya Nomoto

Age: 17

He was fascinated witih gadgets and fiddled with machines. His father is a fisherman, but Katsuya dreamed of being an engineer.

Hirotaka Segawa

Age: 60

Served as the chief radio operator. He was to retire when he returned home from the Hawai'i trip. He radioed for help after the collision.

Toshimichi Furuya

Age: 47

Served as chief engineer. Believed to have been in engine room at the time of the collision.

Hiroshi Nishida

Age: 49

Served as first engineer. Believed to have been in the engine room at the time of the collision.

Described by a colleague as a quiet man with a strong sense of responsibility.

Jyun Nakata

Age: 33

A young man who was more like a big brother than a teacher to his students.
