The Navy invited 16 civilians to join the crew of the USS Greeneville on its maneuvers on Feb. 9, the day the fast attack submarine struck a Japanese research vessel.

Civilians were on the deck of the USS Greeneville when it returned to Pearl Harbor after the submarine's collision with the Ehime Maru.

Two of the civilians were at helm positions at the time of the collision, but two in the group who have spoken out say their involvement did not cause the accident.
