As rain on the Ko‘olau feeds the streams that water the fields that nourish Hawai‘i, so the state’s No. 1 industry flows through the Islands’ economy, touching everything and everyone in its path. A record number of visitors are set to arrive in 2000, and the state will spend record sums to attract and hold them. Over the next 12 months, as those measures take hold and the ranks of tourists rise or fall, the families on these pages will keep their own tab, marking success by the dreams that flower, the promises that take root, and the lifelong goals that recede or grow closer.
