How this poll was conducted

The Honolulu Advertisers Hawaii Poll on Hawaiian issues was conducted by the professional market research firm Ward Research of Honolulu.
Calls were placed April 18-28.
The poll has a sampling error of 4.9 percent, meaning that 95 percent of the time, if the entire adult Hawaiian population were sampled, their responses would be within 4.9 percent plus or minus of those obtained in the poll.
It was performed through random digital dialing, said Ward Research president Becki Ward. People answering the telephone were asked for any adult member of the household of Hawaiian ancestry. In homes where there were more than one, the caller asked for the person whose birthday fell next.
Calls were placed to counties by their proportion of residents of Hawaiian ancestry. Sixty-six percent were on Oahu, 19 percent on Hawaii, 11 percent on Maui and Molokai, and 5 percent on Kauai.
Their median age was 40. Fifteen percent were 18 to 24 and 15 percent 65 and older, with the rest spread between.
A little less than half of the sample polled said they had 50 percent Hawaiian blood or more. And, a little less than half said they or members of their family are on a waiting list for a Hawaiian Homes homestead.
Seventy-eight percent said they are registered to vote in Hawaiis primary and general elections, and 67 percent said they were registered in OHA elections.
