Strike over

Advertiser Staff

After 19 grueling days of picketing and round-the-clock negotiating, the teachers union and state reached a deal just before midnight Monday. The union's nearly 13,000 members voted Tuesday to accept the contract and schools reopened to students Thursday.

Hawai'i's 13,000 public school teachers and the 3,100 University of Hawai'i faculty members walked off the job on April 5, bringing public education in the state to a virtual halt.

The combined walkouts left parents of 183,000 scrambling for child care and threw UH students into a quandary over whether to cross picket lines and attend classes.

Negotiators representing the Department of Education and the teachers' union, the Hawai'i State Teachers Association, failed to reach an agreement before a midnight walkout. The University of Hawai'i Professional Assembly representing faculty rejected the state's last offer April 4 and directed its members to set up picket lines at 6 the following morning.
