The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS), in partnership with the Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden, is excited to offer a NEW workshop: "The Un-thirsty Miracle Tree: What You Don't Know About Kalamungay." This new workshop highlights the cultural significance, nutritional value and water-saving characteristics of the Kalamungay tree.

WHEN: Saturday, November 21, 2009, 10:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m.
WHERE: Halawa Xeriscape Garden, 99-1268 Iwaena Street; Halawa Valley's Central Park Industrial Area
Theodore J.K. Radovich, Ph.D. of the Department of Tropical Plant and Soil Science at the University of Hawaii at Manoa is excited to demonstrate the many attributes and fascinating benefits of the "unthirsty" Kalamungay tree (Moringa oleifera). Participants will learn how this tree is not only an attractive outdoor ornamental, but also how it serves as an important source of food and nutrition for many cultures worldwide. When this workshop is over you will want your very own Kalamungay Tree!
Additionally, the Kalamungay and other xerophytic plants help reduce the amount of water used outdoors on landscapes. A water conservation-conscious household can save 30 to 80 percent of their normal water consumption simply by using Xeriscape principals outdoors.
The BWS and the Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden invite you to learn all about the different kinds of Kalamungay, its many benefits, and how to grow, maintain and prepare this miracle tree (it's easy!!). There is so much more to learn about this fascinating tree so please join us on Saturday, November 21st.
There is a nominal $5.00 registration fee for the general public; Members of the Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden attend for free.
Admission by advance registration only. Registration ends on Friday, November 20th at 2:00 p.m. or when class is filled. Please call 748-5363 to sign up or for more information. Seating is limited so make your reservations early.
